Who's it for?

Digital Media & UX is for the closet psychologist who needs a creative outlet. It requires someone willing to practice empathy and not only place themselves solidly in the mind of the consumer, but also translate that experience into a digital solution. If you want to make something beautiful while also developing the coded process behind the beauty, then this may be the pathway for you.

Experience Something New

Amazon decided in the early 2000s to remove the complication of online shopping and came up with the “1-click checkout”. This might seem logical now, but at the time it was a breakthrough that made Amazon billions of dollars. This is User Experience in the most basic sense, designing user-focused solutions in the digital space and removing customer ‘pain points’. If you make the experience better, people will enjoy using your product or service more — ideally resulting in an increase in a business's bottom line. Seems obvious doesn’t it? It’s what makes User Experience one of the most in-demand design careers in the industry today.

A new way to design

While you’ll spend the majority of you time building and coding digital solutions, user experience is also a holistic practice that is part and parcel of design thinking and brand focus. Think about how the experience of a customer in a physical retail store can traverse all interactions — from how a brand looks to how the staff dress and speak. A digitally minded designer who can be trusted to think holistically about the impact of their practice on a brand is one of the most useful and desired roles within a studio today.

About this Pathway

The Foundry Approach

Our pathways are made up of two distinct tracks of learning: skills and thinking. The skills track allows you to get super nerdy by immersing you in the specialised skills needed to excel in your discipline and the thinking track focuses on the universal thinking and theory that ties creative industries together.

Digital Media Skills

You’ll touch on the Adobe CC design programs (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator) before spending the majority of your time in its digital counterparts (XD, Premier and After Effects). Before you know it you’ll be constructing websites, video and improving human-computer interactions (HCI).

Universal Thinking

You’ll learn critical design thinking, collaborative practice and problem solving in order to tackle any problem you’re faced with. You’ll understand consumer behaviour and how to affect change through strategic thinking models. Most importantly you’ll learn how communicate your vision to other industries, so your ideas can become reality.

Your Pathway Starts in The Wild

The Wild is the first six months of a two-year creative pathway. Here you will learn the foundations that you need to succeed in creative industries while tasting your career options. For those who know what they want to do, and those who haven’t quite figured it out yet, The Wild is the starting point for every Foundry creative.

During your time at Foundry, you’ll benefit from our industry guests as part of our Season Pass program. Every month we fly national guests to Tasmania to speak to our students about their experiences as working creatives. Outrageous? Perhaps to others. But to us it’s a must-have part of the Foundry experience? Absolutely.
