Who's it for?

Graphic Design is for the problem solver who’s an artist at heart. It is for those who believe you should judge a book by its cover and who choose their cereal based on how cool the box looks. Graphic design allows you to push your creative limits and explore the world's problems through design thinking and artistic skills. It suits people who not only want to explore the design process but also want to develop innovative ideas and communicate them via visual media. Most importantly, Graphic Design is about problem solving and taking responsibility for a brand's first  — and most lasting — visual impression.

Design Your Life

When you think about Graphic Design, you probably think of logos and posters. But this dynamic field is about so much more. As businesses realise the impact of branding on their bottom line, designers are becoming seen as an increasingly crucial part of the workforce of a modern economy. From social media to the layout of physical stores, design is permeating all industries, with graphic designers at the forefront. Not many careers afford you the same level of control over human perception as you walk the daily tension between form and function and translate ideas into a visual reality.

The Brand Identity

It’s never been more true that perception equals reality. While this has led to many challenges in the current era of the ‘social web’, it is an incredibly powerful mantra for the designer. Building a brand identity from the ground up gives you the ability to craft consumers’ reality and communicate the key elements of a brand or project. A picture speaks a thousand words — but a design tells a story.

About this Pathway

The Foundry Approach

Our pathways are made up of two distinct tracks of learning: skills and thinking. The skills track allows you to get super nerdy by immersing you in the specialised skills needed to excel in your discipline and the thinking track focuses on the universal thinking and theory that ties creative industries together.

Graphic Design Skills

You’ll learn all about the Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, XD, Premier, After Effects) and how to apply typography, illustration and layout through them. You’ll even get a chance to create content through web design, video and motion, to add an extra dimension to your creations.

Universal Thinking

You’ll learn critical design thinking, collaborative practice and problem solving in order to tackle any problem you’re faced with. You’ll understand consumer behaviour and how to effect change through strategic thinking models. Most importantly you’ll learn how communicate your vision to other industries, so your ideas can become reality.

Your Pathway Starts in The Wild

The Wild is the first six months of a two-year creative pathway. Here you will learn the foundations that you need to succeed in creative industries while tasting your career options. For those who know what they want to do, and those who haven’t quite figured it out yet, The Wild is the starting point for every Foundry creative.

Industry Guests

During your time at Foundry, you’ll benefit from our industry guests as part of our Season Pass program. Every month we fly national guests to Tasmania to speak to our students about their experiences as working creatives. Outrageous? Perhaps to others. But to us it’s a must-have part of the Foundry experience? Absolutely.
