Who's it for?

Programming & Development is for the thinker looking for a creative puzzle. It’s for the venn diagram lover, the logician and the work-around artist. It requires a willingness to be solution oriented and systems focussed. Programming & Development allows for a type of cerebral creativity that isn’t as prevalent in the wider creative landscape.

Develop Your Understanding

Traditionally seen as the home of the geek, programming has garnered a bit of a reputation for being confusing and unattainable for the creative. That was before the geeks rose up and, well, pretty much took over the world. These days, coding isn’t only easy to get into, it’s an important skillset for the well-rounded creative; taking designs in all forms and translating them into a format that can be universally appreciated. Programming is one of the most structured forms of creativity, with those constraints often inspiring some of the most potent creative expression.

Watch Your Language

This is your chance to learn a new way to communicate, create solutions and solve puzzles. Code is the the language of the digital age and a great deal of power is awarded to those who master it. Whether it’s HTML, CSS, Ruby on Rails or Javascript, you’ll be equipped to literally create ‘something from (almost) nothing’. As we approach higher levels of automation, digitisation, interactivity and the birth of artificial intelligence, it’s becoming apparent why schools are wanting to teach code alongside English; they now hold near-equal importance.

About this Pathway

The Foundry Approach

Our pathways are made up of two distinct tracks of learning: skills and thinking. The skills track allows you to get super nerdy by immersing you in the specialised skills needed to excel in your discipline and the thinking track focuses on the universal thinking and theory that ties creative industries together.

Programming & Development Skills

Designing digital products that work better and faster require a certain mindset. If you enjoy the interplay between mathematics, code and data — this is the place for you. Full Stack Developers love playing across all disciplines and know how to successfully take an idea from prototype to MVP (Minimum Viable Product) before releasing it to the world and iterating through live feedback.

Universal Thinking

On the surface, the creative industries seems focused on form (ideas and visuals), but there is a whole other side that lives below making sure everything runs effortlessly. You’ll learn the languages of code, interaction and digital realities. Most importantly you’ll discover how to design and create seamless and intuitive interfaces so the users can stay focused on the experience.

Your Pathway Starts in The Wild

The Wild is the first six months of a two-year creative pathway. Here you will learn the foundations that you need to succeed in creative industries while tasting your career options. For those who know what they want to do, and those who haven’t quite figured it out yet, The Wild is the starting point for every Foundry creative.

Industry Guests

During your time at Foundry, you’ll benefit from our industry guests as part of our Season Pass program. Every month we fly national guests to Tasmania to speak to our students about their experiences as working creatives. Outrageous? Perhaps to others. But to us it’s a must-have part of the Foundry experience? Absolutely.
